Characteristics of Quality Feedback

What is feedback?

From Hattie & Timperley (2007):
  • information provided by an agent regarding one's performance or understanding
  • fills a gap or reduces discrepancies between student understanding and intended learning outcomes
  • feedback is most powerful when it addresses misconceptions or misunderstandings, not a total lack of understanding
  • the most effective feedback:
    • provides cues or reinforcement
    • is in the form of video, audio or computer-assisted feedback
    • is related to goals and outcomes
    • builds on changes from previous trials
  • the least effective feedback is negatively correlated with enhancing performance or achievement and includes:
    • programmed instruction
    • praise
    • punishment
    • extrinsic rewards
